About the Missaukee County Clerk's Office
Missaukee County runs a combined office. The Register of Deeds and the County Clerk are one and the same, staffed by a single elected Clerk and Register. Even so, the office keeps separate record sets for its two roles. Adriana Fowler serves as County Clerk and Register, with Linda Westdorp as Chief Deputy and Ashtyn Helsel and Tina Stoll as deputies. The office sits on the first floor of the county courthouse in Lake City and keeps regular weekday hours.
The clerk also wears a court hat. This office is the Clerk of the 28th Circuit Court, which means it files and maintains many of the county's trial-court records. The official Clerk and Register of Deeds page lays out the office contacts, fees, and services in full.
That single-office setup means one phone call can often point you to the right record, whether it is a court file or a recorded deed.

What the Missaukee County Clerk Does
The clerk's duties reach across county government. The office records and indexes real estate transactions, keeps vital records, and runs elections. It also files court papers as Clerk of the 28th Circuit Court and staffs meetings of the county board. A few services surprise people, like concealed pistol licenses and veteran discharge papers.
- Recording, indexing, and maintaining all real estate transactions
- Serving as Clerk of the 28th Circuit Court
- Filing and issuing vital-record events that occur in the county
- Acting as County Election Official and Clerk of the Board of Commissioners
- Processing concealed pistol licenses, notary applications, and DD214 discharge records
Note: Because the clerk and register share one office, a records request for a court file and a request for a recorded deed both start at the same counter.
Missaukee County Vital Records
Vital records are the life-event certificates the county files. The clerk issues certified copies of birth, death, and marriage records for events that happened in Missaukee County. Access rules differ by record type. Birth records are the most guarded, and only the named party or a person allowed by statute may buy one.
To get a birth certificate, bring an unexpired government photo ID, a valid U.S. passport, or a current U.S. military ID. Guardians, heirs, and legal representatives must add supporting documents. Anyone can buy a birth record over 100 years old. Death and marriage certificates are more open, and any requesting party may obtain them with a written request and the fee.
Each certified copy costs $10 for the first copy. Extra copies of the same record bought at the same time run $3 each.
Marriage Licenses in Missaukee County
Couples planning to marry apply for the license at the clerk's office. At least one applicant must live in Missaukee County. Both parties need proper identification, and both must be at least 18 to apply without parental consent. The fee is $20, collected when you apply.
Timing matters. A three-day waiting period runs between the application date and the day the license is issued. Once issued, the license stays good for 33 days from the application date. Couples who need a certified copy of the marriage record later can request one from the clerk, and the county's marriage and divorce records guide covers that path.
Note: Plan around the three-day wait and the 33-day window, since a license applied for too early or too late will not line up with the ceremony date.
Missaukee County Assumed Name Filings
A business owner using a name other than their legal name files an assumed name, often called a DBA, with the county clerk. Michigan ties this filing to Public Act 151 of 1949, set out in MCL 445.1. The certificate costs $10 to file and stays valid for five years from the filing date.
Owners who close or transfer a business file a dissolution at the clerk's office. That dissolution filing also costs $10. The clerk's page offers DBA forms in letter and legal size along with a dissolution form to download.
Register of Deeds Records in Missaukee County
The register side of the office holds the county's real estate history. Recorded documents run from 1871 to the present, and records are computerized from 1989 forward. Researchers can use the vault from 9 to 5, where five terminals are open for public searches. The register records deeds, mortgages, liens, plats, land contracts, and other property documents, and it collects real estate transfer tax for the state and the county.
The Register of Deeds services page spells out the recording rules and the e-recording options.
Recording a document costs $30, with $3 added for each reference after the first and $5 more when a document carries a warranty clause needing tax certification. The office accepts e-recording through three approved vendors:
- Simplifile
- CSC eRecording
- Indecomm Global Services
Warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, land contracts, and memoranda of land contracts cannot be e-recorded, so those still come in on paper.
How to Request a Certified Copy
A certified copy carries the county's seal and proves a document is genuine. Courts, banks, and government agencies usually require the certified version rather than a plain printout. The steps below keep a request on track.
- Identify the record you need, including names, the record type, and a case number when the request involves a court file.
- Pick up or download the matching request form from the clerk's office or the county document center.
- Submit the form with proper identification and the required fee. Register searches can be emailed to register@missaukee.org, with credit cards accepted by phone.
- Pick up the certified copy in person or wait for it by mail. The register releases no results until payment is made.
Note: The register will not send search results or copies until the fee is paid, so include payment or call ahead with a card to avoid a delay.
Records Request Form Fields
Each request type asks for slightly different details. Bringing the right facts and payment the first time keeps the office from mailing your form back. The county document center hosts the clerk forms, birth, death, and marriage request forms, and the register lookup request.
You can reach every form through the Missaukee County document center. The table below shows what each request needs.

Missaukee County Court Records and Filings
As Clerk of the 28th Circuit Court, this office keeps and files many trial-court records for Missaukee County. Circuit Court handles felonies, larger civil claims, family matters, and appeals from lower courts. The clerk is the local place to request certified copies of those files, pull older records, and confirm case details the online tools do not show.
For a broader look at the county's court structure, the Missaukee County Circuit Court page covers what that bench decides and how cases move through it. Certified court copies and paper files still come through the clerk, even when a case first appears in a statewide online search.
Many case records can be viewed first through Michigan's statewide public case lookup. That tool shows docket data, but it does not replace the clerk when you need a sealed detail confirmed, a full paper file pulled, or a copy stamped with the court seal. Older Circuit Court files, in particular, often live only at the counter. A call or a mailed request to the clerk fills the gap the online search leaves.
Note: The online case search is a fast first stop, yet a certified or older Circuit Court record still comes from the clerk's counter in Lake City.
